Today in Movie History: September 5

It’s a pretty quiet day today… save for one very special film. Orson Welles was all of 24 years old when RKO Pictures handed him the keys to the kingdom. He only produced one movie with the freedom he was promised before the studio decided he was an active menace and shut him down. Their decision ranks as one of the eternal mysteries of cinema, because that film he did? It was called Citizen Kane, and it literally redefined the medium. Today, it’s still routinely cited as the greatest motion picture of all time… and the guy who made it spent the rest of his life hustling money to get his projects made. His shining masterpiece opened today in 1941.
