January movies usually consist of either Christmas hits playing out their run, Oscar contenders going wide, or embarrassing monster movies the studios are hoping to quietly dump. Every now and then, however, one of those last types steps up and surprises you. Case in point: Fallen, a nifty little supernatural thriller that sends Denzel Washington’s cop on the trail of a killer with the ability to move from body to body. The director, Gregory Hoblit, cut his teeth on the legendary Hill Street Blues TV show and gives him a chance to throw his classic police procedural narrative for a hell of a spooky loop. He gets plenty of help not only from Washington, but from a stellar cast including John Goodman, Donald Sutherland, Elia Koteas, James Gandolfini, and Embeth Davidtz. It opened today in 1998, and if you’re in the mood for something spooky and a little different, give it a look.
